Ideal blend of sahitya, swaras

P. VIJAYAMBIKA

A concert by Changanassery Madhavan Namboodiri had a blend of swarakalpana and sublime ragalapana.

ECHOES OF HIS GURU: Changanassery Madhavan Namboodiri's concert highlighted his training under stalwarts.

Changanassery Madhavan Namboodiri's Carnatic vocal concert organised by Swaralaya at M.D. Ramanathan Hall, Chembai Memorial Government Music College, as part of its monthly programme, was a spellbinding treat for rasikas. The concert had an excellent blend of swarakalpanas and sublime ragalapana.

His rendition of kritis captured the beauty of both dhathu (sahitya) and mathu (swaras). Trained under stalwarts such as T.V. Sankaranarayan and Kumara Keralavarma, Namboodiri started his concert with a melodious Navaragamalika varnam of Pattanam Subramania Iyer set to Adi tala and repeated it in the second speed.

`Jaya Jaya Ganapathy Mangalakari' in raga Hamsadhwani, set to Adi tala, a composition of Ganapathi Sachidananda Swamigal, and the kalpanaswaras that followed, showcased his training under T.V.S.

Delighting listeners

He captivated the audience by starting the Tyagaraja kriti `Ragasudharasa' in raga `Antholika' at Anupallavi, which is at Tharasthayi. `Mamavasada Janani' of Swati Tirunal in raga Nattakurinchi set to Roopaka tala with delectable niraval at `Lalithamanihara' delighted the listeners.

The delineation of the raga Poorvikalyani was classical and mellifluous, evoking the ragabhava to the fullest. T.H. Subramanian, who accompanied on the violin, complemented it during his solo.

`Deva Deva Jagadeeswara Jayabhujaga' a composition of Swati Tirunal, set to Adi tala was sung with piety. Artistic niraval at `Daridha Magadha Maheepa' instead of the usual place `Pavananupama' was appropriate.

Rendition of raga Reethigowla and the Tyagaraja kriti `Nannu Vidachi Rama' set to Misra Chappu, sung in a slow pace, created a contemplative mood. A melodious Tamil kriti of Kodeeswara Iyer `Mohanakara Muthukkumara' in the Vivadimelakartha raga Neethimathi was next. Madhavan Namboodiri showed some variation by selecting the raga Gowrimanohari for detailed elaboration. An exhaustive alapana followed by the Swati kriti `Sarasa Sama' set to Adi tala, adorned with beautiful niraval at `Marajanaka sura muni sevitha,' and flawless manodharma swara were proof of his expertise. T.H. Subramanian on the violin, Kovai Prakash on the mridangam and Kottayam Unnikrishnan on the ghatom provided the musical accompaniment.

The Thaniavarthanam was superb. The Thukkadas `Kaliyuga Varada Kankanda Daivamai' in Vrindavana Saranga and `Govardhana Giridhara' of Narayana Theertha pleased the ears. `Karpakame Kan Parai' of Papanasam Sivan in raga Madhyamavathi set to Adi tala in a very fast tempo brought the concert to a close.
