Marriage woes on the stage

Two comedies focussed on issues relating to marriage.

LAUGH LINES A few comic moments from the play.

Two short plays, Pelli Choopulu and Vaayidaala Pelli, were staged as part of VMDA's monthly schedule. The two plays, each running into an hour, were staged at Kalabharathi last Friday.

Scripted and direced by V. Srinivas, Pelli Choopulu depicted how a rich farmer invites all his four nephews to meet his only daughter and decides to get her married to the person of her choice.

He never knew that each one of them came with an eye on the property the girl would inherit. Worse still, the nephews are either into gambling, or have taken to alcohol.

On the professional front, one is into politics and the other is an actor. Finally, going by the advice of his neighbour, the farmer gets his daughter married to another boy.

With the exception of N. Babu Rao as the neighbour, the performances of the other actors were over the top. Nonetheless, the situational humour gave some comic relief.

The second play, Vaayidaala Pelli, scripted by G.V. Rama Rao and directed by reputed theatre actor Mallela Rajendra Prasad was a comical satire on the current trend of instalment basis payment while shopping.

The satire showed a bridegroom taking to the streets like a vendor, announcing that he is available for marriage and dowry can be paid through instalments.

This play sustained audience interest with mirthful dialogues and incidents. Rajendra Prasad did a good job as a director but failed to contain over-the-top portrayal by Sandhya Priyadarshini, who donned the role of the bride's mother.

Other actors — V.S. Pushkar as the father, Vijayalakshmi as the bride, Surya as the bridegroom, Ch. D. Prasad as Pellilla Perayya and Mallika as the second bride performed well.

Raju's music for both plays was in sync with the underlying theme of comedy. make-up was by Bharani and art direction by P. V. K. Ramana.

For the second play, the make-up was done by Angi R Mohana Rao and dιcor by Battili Vikaram.
