How slokas mould children

The way slokas disciplined children was stressed at the function organised by Sringeri Sath Sangh, Srirangam.

A function was organised to distribute prizes to the winners of a sloka contest held under the auspices of Sringeri Sath Sangh of the Sringeri Sankara Math at Srirangam recently.
Speakers at the function spoke on the efficacy of slokas in disciplining the mind and building one's character.
The power of sloka
Quoting a few verses, they said each sloka had a specific power to invoke eternal divine blessings. Verses also helped regulate one's faculty of thought by developing concentration.
S. Thiyagarajan, retired Principal of National College, appealed to parents to motivate their children to learn slokas.
Childhood was the most appropriate time for learning and it helps achieve overall development, he said.
According to Nagarajan, a resource-person, the contest, aimed at encouraging talent, came up at the end of a special summer sloka class for 50 days.
The Math also conducts weekly classes at its premises on Sundays, 7 a.m., during which Sri Ganesa Pancharathinam, Thotakashtagam, Subramanya Bhujangam, Siva Bhujangam, Shyamala Dandakam, Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam and Chapter III of the Bhagavad Gita would be covered.
Mr. Thiyagarajan gave away the prizes to the winners. While N. Gayathiri and Sugitha won the first and second prizes respectively in the seniors category, Kavitha and Dineshkumar emerged winners among the juniors.
