Awarded fellowship
Thirupoonthuruthy Venkatesan
Sangeetha vidwan Thirupoonthuruthy V. Venkatesan has been awarded a `Senior Fellowship' by the Government of India, Ministry of Tourism and Culture, in the field of Carnatic vocal (classical) music for a period of two years with effect from June 1, 2006.
V. Venkatesan inherited a rich musical tradition from his father T. R. Viswanatha Bhagavathar. His uncle was Mangudi Chidambara Bhagavathar, famed Harikatha exponent. He is the disciple of Alathoor Srinivasa Iyer.
Venkatesan has continued his father's tradition of holding the annual aradhana festivals of Sri Narayana Tirtha at Thirupoonthuruthy village and was closely associated with the formation of the Sri Narayana Tirtha Swamigal Trust in 1986 at Chennai. The Trust celebrates the Jayanthi of the saint and holds a tarangam festival every year in Chennai.
Last year, a special cover was released by the Department of Posts, Government of India, to mark the Jayanthi of Sri Narayana Tirtha.
Venkatesan has published 57 tarangam verses of Tirtha with notation. He has been propagating it through two Taranga Vidyasalas at Thanjavur. It is appropriate that Venkatesan (Ph: 2493 6671) has chosen the comprehensive appreciation of Sri Narayana Tirtha's Sri Kishna Leela Tarangini as the subject of his project for his Fellowship.
