`Subhadraharanam' Kathakali provided an exhilarating experience for fans of Kathakali. Organised by Ernakulam Kathakali Club, the play, `Subhadraharanam,' written by Manthredathu Namboodiripad (1851-1906), has many sequences that enable all the actors to display their talent and potential.
Kottakkal Nandakumar in a remarkable performance displayed his potential as he enacted Arjuna. It was enthralling to watch his stylised acting in a slow tempo, his facial expressions and body language portraying a range of emotions.

Select padams were sung. `Kanjadalalochane,' enacted by Nandakumar, helped the audience grasp the gist of the story. Performance by C. R. Ratheesh as Subhadra, Thripunithura Radhakrishnan as Sreekrishnan, and Biju Bhasker as Balabhadran were impressive. The vocals by Kottakkal Narayanan and Kottakkal Madhu supported the actors. Percussion was by Kalamandalam Krishnadas (chenda) and Kalamandalam Sasi (madhalam).
The performance was in connection with the valedictory day of the Kathakali appreciation course organised by Ernakulam Kathakali Club and Kerala Fine Art Society.
"There was a good response to the appreciation course in Kathakali; enthusiasts from all walks of life and age groups attended the classes. We were able to cover most of the basic aspects of Kathakali within a short period," said C.P. Unnikrishan, course director.
Kalamandalam Sreekumar, Thripunithura Radhakrishnan, Biju Bhasker, Kalamandlam Sasi and Kalanilayam Murali were the artistes who participated in the demonstrations. The participants felt that more classes were needed to learn about mudras, application of rasas and various aspects of acting in Kathakali.
