Turning 25 in style!

The silver jubilee celebrations of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation saw a number of cultural programmes.

A large number of programmes figured in the cultural bonanza arranged by the civic authorities of Vijayawada at Kshetrayya Kala Kshetram auditorium in connection with the silver jubilee celebrations of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation.

The week-long cultural festival began with a dance drama titled Mana Vijayawada, specially written for the occasion by Polavarapu Koteswara Rao. The troupe of Sri Nritya Academy performed to the direction of Natyacharya Bhagavathula Venkatarama Sarma.

The dance drama delighted the crowd by depicting the episodes of Kanakadurga Vaibhavam, praising the deity of Vijayawada, the construction of the famous Prakasam Barrage, Gandhiji's visit to Vijayawada and other memorable events in the history of the city. Good performances came from dancers Sowmya, Srinivasa sarma, Ramakrishna, Suhasini, Deepthi, Ramya, Lakshmi and Jayanthi.

In the programme Sangeeta Vaibhavam, playback singers Nagoor Babu, Ramakrishna, Ghantasala Ratnakumar, Murali, Mohan Das, Kamala, Sasikala Swamy and Nishma rendered some popular old and new songs.

Noteworthy recital

The silver jubilee celebrations of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation presented several delightful dance programmes at Kshetrayya Kalakshetram out of which the highlight was the dance drama Srinivasa Kalyanam, superbly directed by Aruna Bhikshu — an eminent dance personality.

Her troupe, from Natyaveda of performing arts, presented the story of the holy wedding of Lord Venkateswara and Padmavathi. The popular story was also presented as Kuchipudi dance dramas by maestro Vempati Chinna Satyam and noted Kuchipudi exponent Shobha Naidu, which received accolades in the country and abroad.

Aruna Bhikshu's presentation of the dance drama was class apart. The ballet was excellently penned by Arudra. Fine music by D.V.S. Sastri also added value to the drama.

The main roles of Lord Siva and Padmavathi were superbly played by well known Kuchipudi and Andhra Natyam exponent Kala Krishna and Devulapalli Uma respectively.
