NUTSHELL

Namasankeertanam

Asthika Samajam, Tiruvanmiyur, has organised namasankeertanam by Udayalur Kalyanarama Bhagavathar at Amarabharathi, 12, West Tank Street, on June 26, 6.30 p.m.

Students of Shreess Nrythyakshetra will present a Bharatanatyam recital, `Valli Thirukalyanam,' on June 25, 6.30 p.m. at R. K. Swamy Auditorium, Mylapore.

Ballet

The ballet dance, `Punyakoti' organised by AIM for Seva will be staged at Narada Gana Sabha on June 25, 6.30 p.m. Donor passes are available at all Sri Krishna Sweets outlets, or call 94443 94216. The ballet is directed and staged by well known writer and philosopher, Raghavendra J. Prabhat, director, Prabhat Arts International, Bangalore.

Workshop

Award for violinist

Maharajapuram Santhanam Foundation will be presenting the annual memorial award to vidwan Parur M. S. Anantharaman at a function on June 24 at P. Obul Reddy Hall, Vani Mahal. The merit awards will be presented to Geetha Raja, S. R. Mahadeva Sarma and Vaikom Gopalakrishnan.

P. Obul Reddy, industrialist, presides and presents the awards. The awards presentation function will be followed by a flute recital by B. Vijayagopal, Parur M. A. Sundaresan, Unayalpuram K. Sivaraman and B. S. Purushothaman.

Memorial programme

Shri Maharajapuram Santhanam Rasikas Trust, Chennai, has organised a memorial concert on June 23, the day the maestro gave his last concert at Manjakkudy. Every year the Trust organises programmes simultaneously at five different towns and also distributes scholarships to students, gives financial aid to needy musicians and offers mediclaim policies to deserving musicians.

This year, the concerts will be held at Chennai, Thanjavur, Chidambaram, Karaikkudi and Adoni (Andhra Pradesh). At Chennai's Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Shoba Chandrashekar will give a concert today, 4.30p.m.

Musicologist B. M. Sundaram will felicitate Thirukkarugavur G. Srinivasaraghavan (vocal), Thiruppambaram T. S.K.Sivasubramania Pillai (nagaswaram) and T.G.Dakshinamurthy Pillai (tavil).

Tribute

Kaviarasu Kannadasan Tamizh Sangam, (Ph: 22485633; 22631496), has organised celebrations that include the 80th birthday of the poet, Kannadasan Award 2006 and the completion of the Tamizh Sangam's 15th year. At the function at the Vani Mahal, T. Nagar, on June 24, 6 p.m., a portrait of the poet will be unveiled by Dr. Kannadasan Ramasamy. Composers M.S.Viswanathan and T.K.Ramamurthy will honour this year's awardees, Gangai Amaran and Sripriya Rajkumar.

Discourse

Akilabharatha Sadhu Sangam, Nanganallur, is organising a discourse, `Deiveega Kalyana Vaibhavangal Pravachana Mahotsavam' by Sri Hariji, son of Krishnapremi, June 25-July 1. Book release

The book, `Gnana Parambarai,' a compilation of the life, teachings and the works of 30 Tamil saints, is to be released at a function at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, on June 25, 5 p.m. The head of Kanchipuram Thonda Mandala Adhinam will preside and release the book in five volumes.
