Indian connection
Achint
The new Superman movie, `Superman Returns' is a great upholder of traditions and so the tradition of using Indian animators for big budget Hollywood movies has also been upheld! "It was lovely, delightful," 23-year-old Achint Bansal, who worked as digital compositor on `Superman,' says on the experience. "Superman came to Rhythm and Hues, India, where I was working. The company, which has done SFX work for `Chronicles of Narnia' and the upcoming Garfield movie, is a subsidiary of Rhythm and Hues in Los Angeles.
Working with a team of 30 animators, Achint did a lot of "ocean and water effects. We also had to remove wires from frames and did enhancing work for `Superman.' Like we removed wrinkles from his suit and created the cape." The cape was done later because according to Achint, "most of the shooting was done in front of a green screen and the cape hampered the photography."
The toughest job for Achint was, "We had to erase a wire and there was a child's face behind the wire. It was a challenge."
Speaking of logistics, Achint said: "We worked with the animation head. We were provided with the shots, which we worked on. Everyday we would be on conference call with Los Angeles to iron out details." The brief was to use a bright happy palate, as "Superman is a child's hero unlike `Batman' who is darker and has an adult appeal."
Thus behind every superhero is a legend and behind every legend is a dedicated, creative SFX team preferably from India!
