Enthralling performance

This past week, India International Centre was host to a fine Hindustani vocal recital by Shyamali Mukhopadhyay, disciple of Bidushi Savita Devi of Banaras Gharana. The 90-minute long programme saw the vocalist moving through Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri forms of semi-classical music that kept the audience spell bound. Accomanying her on tabla was Ustad Ballu Khan Warsi, on harmonium, B.K. Nizami, on Sarangi Pandit Bharat Bhushan Goswami and on tanpura Rajjak Ali.
Shyamali began her recital with traditional Thumri in raga Mishra Des, "Kaahe piya mose karata thitholi, ab na jhaanu raja ras ki boli... " It showed her strong base in applying khatka and murkhi, etc. smoothly and spontaneously. Dadra that followed was in Shringar Ras, "Baali umar larkhian na chhero saiyaan.." The Chaiti, "Senjia se saiyaan rutth gaile ho Rama.." set the tune commensurate with the mood of the seasons. Shyamali concluded her evening recital with a bhajan, "Radhika Shyamsundar ko pyari..."
