Performance by youngsters

The young diciples of Avasaraala Rukmaji Rao provided the finale of the Visakha Music Academy's festival.

A delightful Bharatanatyam recital by 10-year-old Shalini Rama Rao and Ragamayi Balasubramanyam, pupils of Nritya Kalabharathi of Bharatiya Vidya Kendram, provided the grand finale of the three-day festival organised by the Visakha Music Academy.

Their guru, Avasaraala Rukmaji Rao, wielded the cymbals, music teacher of the school, M. Venkata Rao, along with D. Rama Devi rendered excellent vocal support in the able company of M. Edukondalu on mridangam and K.V.S. Prasad on violin.

A religious offering, the recital got off to a grand start with Pushpanjali set in Naata in trisra eka of paying obeisance to Lord Ganesha, the guru, the accompanists and the audience followed by another suddha nritta item - jatiswaram in roopakam in Vasantham, both presented with lithe grace by Raagamayi.

Next was a Sabdam, that had a lyrical content in its simplest form and opens the way to mix nritta with nritya for the first time in the performance.

The item set in Raagamaalika in Misrachaapu was presented with felicitous charm by Shalini.

Then came the main-sail of the Bharatanaatyam repertoire, the padavarnam that stands as a test for the dancers' ability not only fulfilling the intricacies of the padachalanam, mudra, bhangima and abhinaya but also bringing out a fine blend of them in judicious proportions that could surface even the finest of the fine emotions embedded in the lyrics along with the nicities in music compositions.

Ragamayi empathetically presenting the thodi padavarnam of Dikshitar, danced her way into the hearts of the audience.

The items that followed sustaining the tenor and tempo including the spell of empathy cast on the audience were, tarangam of naarayana theertha in aaditaalam in Hindolam, Simhasanasthithe of Dikshitar prefixed with a couple of slokams from Ambapancharatnam in raagamaalika, Raamudu Raghavudu of Annamayya set to music in Kaanada, another of his composition set to music by composer Madurai Krishnan and his own Thillana, by Shalini and Raagamayi alternately in that order.
