Love story with a twist

M.L. NARASIMHAM

A classroom, storeroom and a dance sequence.

WORRIED PARENTS Jayasudha, Raghuvaran, Chandramohan and Suhasini on the sets.

Bhanu Shankar is a happy man today. For he has finally realised his dream of directing a film which has his own story and a narrative style of his choice on his own terms, thanks to a helpful producer M. Kumara Swamy.

We caught up with the young director at Annapurna Studios where he is shooting a song sequence for S.K.S. Creations, Vaalliddari Vayasu Padahare... !

After a brief chat with his choreographer D.K.S. Babu and cinematographer Sreenu Gadiraju, the director orders for a take.

The song is played on the tape, the camera rolls and the hero Tarun Chandra and debut heroine Devaki place move in perfect sync.

A smile and an approval nod cross the face of D.K.S. as the lead pair do the sequence the way he had composed the romantic number. It is evident by the way Sreenu is performing with the camera that he prefers not to experiment with various angles and lenses to shoot the sequence.

He belongs to the tribe of cinematographers who believe that shots for a regular film should be easy on the eye.

Captivating visuals

"He is doing an excellent job with captivating visuals. This film will give him the break he has been patiently waiting for and of course for me too," smiles the director. "Tarun had acted in the Kannada film, Khushi as one of the three heroes. He is exceptionally talented. Devaki hails from Visakhapatnam. A quick grasper, she has done well. This song emanates from an imagination. The two move out from their class room in the college, sneak into the store room and get into a romantic mood and then of course break into a song," laughs Bhanu Shankar.

Turning a bit serious he warns, "Don't come to the conclusion either by this song situation or by the title that it is again one of those regular teenage love stories. The concept, which I cannot reveal at this stage is new and has not appeared on the Indian screen. Otherwise how can you expect such veterans as Jayasudha, Chandramohan, Raghuvaran and Suhasini agreeing to work in a low-budget film with newcomers and with a relatively new director?"

The story revolves around the young ones and their parents. Raghuvaran and Jayasudha are teamed to act as the hero's parents while Suhasini and Chandramohan play the heroine's parents.

"There are no villains. The bonding between the parents and the young ones is so strong that neither of them could cause any pain or problem to the other. Despite the ripples and tensions created by circumstances, the bonding remains intact. We played more on highlighting the parental values and how their teenage children react to the elders' feelings. The climax is something different and talks about the crucial decision the young ones have taken about their future. The film is dedicated to every parent."

Bhanu Shankar had some bitter experiences before this venture happened to him. A film of his was shelved after a major chunk of shoot due to differences between the hero and producer and for another film the producer had credited himself for the story, screenplay and directorial supervision thus robbing him of hard work. He says he is indebted to K.S. Ramarao for giving him a chance to direct Yevare Athagaadu, his first release.

The rehearsal is still on with D.K.S. enacting the dance steps to the lead pair.

The film has an impressive star cast with K. Viswanath making a special appearance as a judge and Posani Krishnamurali as a lawyer.

The comedy part is taken care by Telengana Sakunthala, Venumadhav, Narsing Yadav and Brahmanandam. Due for release in July, the film is co-produced by Dr. Suresh Yellappa and presented by Ravula Venkatesh.
