Labour of love

Karur R. Narayanan who is a writer under the pen name `Nimalan,' is also a musician and musicologist. He has authored a book `Isai Alaigal - 1008,' dealing with 32 melakartas and 1,008 ragas derived from them. They are presented in the form of Sanskrit slokas to facilitate easy identification of the parent ragas.

The 72-melakarta scheme, according to the Sampoorna Paddhati of Govinda, the Katapayadi Sankhya and other easy methods to find the number of the melakarta are some of the features. This publication is truly a labour of love that would benefit students of Carnatic music to a large extent. It is reasonably priced at Rs. 60 and is available with V. Narayanan (Nimalan), 46/S-5, Renga Complex, 1st Main Road, Nanganallur. An audio CD, free of cost, goes with the book.
