Tailor-made role

SHOBA NAIR

Vanitha makes an impact as the mother who is forced to take a stand against her son in `Amma Manasu.'

IN LOVE WITH THE CHARACTER: Vanitha, right, in a scene from `Amma Manasu.'

It is as if the role was tailor made for her. Vanitha in the role of Jalaja teacher in K.K. Rajeev's serial `Amma Manasu' has been wining accolades all the way. The serial on Asianet has her playing a mother who adores her son. However, when she sees her son taking the wrong path in life, she has no qualms in opposing him.

Choosy about roles

"I fell in love with the character - one that reaches out to viewers and it also has an underlying moral," says Vanitha. And the serial was the reason why she kept several offers at bay for quite sometime

She emphasises that when it comes to films, she does not want to accept an offer on an impulse, but will accept one when the right roles comes along. One such role was in `Nottam' where she plays Nedumudi Venu's wife.

Vanitha, who made her debut in 1979, took a sabbatical from movies after her marriage to actor and singer Krishnachandran, with whom she had starred in `Vanithapolice,' `Belt Mathai,'and `Deeparadhana.'

Her comeback has gifted her roles that tap her talent; something that was not very conspicuous in her earlier innings.

In 2001, Vanitha acted as Mata Amrithanandamayi and Kaali, in a tele-film. In Tamil, she was called upon to do a negative role on mini-screen, in K. Balachander's `Kaalmulaitha Aasai.' She continued to be active in Tamil serials, such as `Alaigal,' and `Kolangal,' and in Malayalam. She also donned the role of the mother in Tamil films like `Kaanaa Kandein,' `Kalaapa Kaadal' and `Paarijatam.' "Every language has its own style of acting. For instance, in Tamil, one is more vociferous in expressing feelings, whereas in Malayalam, the manner is more subdued."

Dwelling upon the kind of roles she had enacted she says, "It may be the way I look, somehow I always play positive roles. But I am willing to play any kind of role, as long as it stands out."

Vanitha's entry into films, was as a school-girl in director Dorai's `Paadai Maarinaal.' Thereafter she did many memorable roles in about 120 films in Tamil. She played the main role in her debut Malayalam movie, `Chandrabimbam,' and became a familiar face among Malayalis with her roles in `Eenadu,' `Kaikeyi,' and `Enickum Oru Divasum.' She was cast opposite Mammooty and Mohanlal, in `Vikadakavi' and `Keezhvanum Sivackum,' respectively.

Now, Vanitha has great expectations about her role opposite Devan in the latest venture directed by Venu and a Joycy story - `Mounanombaram' - for which the shooting has already started.
