To honour a teacher

Rugmini Gopalakrishnan, will be felicitated on her 70th birthday by her students, at Theerthapadamandapam, East Fort on July 22. A veena artiste, Rugmini is the granddaughter of the late L. Muthia Bhagavathar and niece of Nellai T.V. Krishna Moorthy, the well-known Carnatic vocalist. She was trained by Nellai T.V. Krishna Moorthy and later under K.S. Narayana Swami whose bhani is seen in her.

Rugmini is the first recipient of the President's Award in the All-India AIR competitions held in 1954. She retired as Principal of Chembai Memorial College, Palakkad.

A top grade artiste of All India Radio, she gives regular concerts inAIR and Doordarshan.
