True professionalism

T.V. RAMACHANDRAN

C.S. Sajeev's rendition reminded one of the golden days of the late Palakkad K.V. Narayanaswamy.

SEASONED PERFORMERS: C.S. Sajeev was accompanied by mridangam maestro T.K. Murthy and his disciple Harinarayana; V.V.Ravi played the violin.

A Sunday gathering of music aficionados were treated to an excellent classical music concert under the auspices of Rasikapriya, at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan auditorium, Ernakulam, by C.S. Sajeev.

A mechanical engineer with a post-graduate degree in business administration, C.S. Sajeev learnt his preliminary lessons from Latha, Geetha and Vijaykumar of Irinjalakuda. Subsequently, he came under the tutelage of Varkala C.S. Jayaraman, with whom, he spent about eight years. He first appeared on Doordarshan Malayalam, in 1986, presenting a concert in the segment called `Budding Artists.'

He is now an `A' grade artist in Thrissur All India Radio. He has performed all over India and in all prominent sabhas.

His concert in Kochi started with the familiar varnam `Sami Ninne' in raga Sree followed by Dikshitars's kriti `Mahaganapathim' in Nattai. Subsequently, Shyama Sastri's composition `Sankari Samkuru' in Saveri was aesthetically presented.

A brief alapana of Kedargagowla culminated in the kriti `Sami Ki sare Yevarre,' composed by Papanasam Sivan in Misrachapu Talam. `Nada Thanumanisham' in Chitharanjani by Tyagaraja, `Ethi janmam ithi' in Varali, also by Tyagaraja, and `Koluvaiyunnade' in Devagandhari followed in succession.

The alapana of Varali raga was handled with true professionalism.

Main raga

The main raga of the evening was Madhyamavathi in which the artist took up the kriti `Rama katha Sudha' composed by Tyagaraja. The alapana, niravals and swaraprastharas were excellent. Sajeev's rendition reminded one of the golden days of the late Palakkad K.V.Narayanaswamy, the great musician of yesteryear. The delineation of this kriti ended with an excellent thani avarthanam by the great mridangam vidwan T.K. Murthy and his disciple Harinarayanan, also on the mridangam.

Violin accompaniment was by veteran V.V. Ravi. Dr. Murthy and Ravi added lustre to the concert.

The concert concluded with `Oh Raghuveera' in Desh, `Panimathi' in Ahiri by Swati Tirunal, `Om Namo Narayana' in Karnaranjani by Ambhujam Krishna, `Kurai onrum illai' by Rajaji, a composition in Suruti and Thillana in Kamas. It was an excellent evening of music.
