Dance adds appeal to MS repertoire

V. GANAPATHY

The recital of Shobana Ramesh, in which the songs of M.S. were portrayed with neat gestures, was sweet and blissful.

Shobana Ramesh.

Shobana Ramesh's homage to M.S.Subbulakshmi in the form of a brilliant portrayal of the famous songs of the great singer was indeed a delightful experience for the audience that had turned up on Sunday last.

Rasika Ranjana Sabha, Tiruchi, had organised the dance recital, "Maalai Pozhuthinile," of the dance maestro.

The virtuosity of Shobana Ramesh was so great that within the very short-recorded songs, sung entirely, within the limitation of a few minutes of the old time gramophone records, she brought out the richness of the songs through subtle bhavas and adavus.

Series of sangatis

In these days of CDs and LP records the songs are sung with ease, spread over quite a comfortable time with a series of sangatis which could help a Bharatanatyam exponent to portray the subtle bhavas and expressions effortlessly.

However, Shobana Ramesh, an accomplished artiste that she is, brought out with consummate ease bhavas and a myriad expressions in the few minutes the songs could afford.

The nostalgic, vibrant and majestic voice of M.S. through her records `Jagadho Dharana," "Kaatrinile Varum Geetham," "Kuraiondrumillai," the Meera bhajan, "Sriman Narayana" synchronised with Bharatanatyam was sweet and blissful.
