Cultural vignettes

P. SURYA RAO

A Kuchipudi performance and enactment of the classic play `Amuktamalyada' were the highlights of the week.

PERFECT POISE Demos Gora shows her talent.

Vijayawada Cultural Academy presented a fine Kuchipudi dance performance by well-known Kuchipudi exponent Dr. Demos Gora, as its monthly programme at the Velidandla Hanumantaraua Grandhalayam Hall. Demos is an accomplished dancer who received many awards and accolades from all over the country.

She started the programme with the traditional invocatory item Vinayaka Kautam and followed with a superb dance interpretation of the majestic composition of Thyagaraja Ksheerasagara Sayana of Thyagaraja in Devagandhari.

The episodes that figure in the keertana are Gajendra Moksham, Droupadi Vastrapaharanam and the release of Bhaktha Ramadas from Tanisha's prison. The episodes were emotionally and appealingly depicted by Demos through her abhinayam.

Other highlights in her programme were Narayana's tarangam Nandanandana Gopala, the famous Lekha scene from Bhamakalapam and a sparkling thillana composed by Dr. Balamuralikrishna. Demos proved her precision of footwork in the thillana. Noted journalist Turlapati Kutumba Rao, writer Polavarapu Koteswara Rao and actor P.V. Raghavaiah praised Demos's prowess.

Finely enacted Amuktamalyada

As part of its Silver Jubilee celebrations, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation arranged at Kshetrayya Kala Kshetram, an excellent Padya Natakam Amuktamalyada, the famous classic.

The script for the drama was written by J.K. Bhargavi, well-known movie writer and Dalavayi Sudhakar made a neat job of directing it. Sidhivinayaka Natyamandali of Tirupathi presented the play.

The drama depicted the devotion and love of Godadevi for her Lord Ranganadha and how she finally succeeds in becoming his consort.

Seasoned actors played their roles with ease and involvement.

The poor attendance reflected the lack of sincerity on the part of the corporation authorities in giving sufficient publicity to the programme.
