Remembering Semmangudi

The 30th annual celebration of the Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer Golden Jubilee Foundation was inaugurated recently at Raga Sudha Hall, Mylapore, by N. Murali, Managing Director the Hindu.

The foundation, started to commemorate Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer's 50 years in the performing music field, by his disciples, organises an annual festival that begins almost always on July 25, the birth date of Semmangudi. At the music festival, the institution honours a senior musician. The foundation provides financial assistance to indigent musicians, gives scholarships to deserving students of music, publishes books on music, releases CDs of the doyen, and so on.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Murali lauded the activities of the institution and honoured Prof. B. Krishnamoorthy. Musician R. Vedavalli felicitated B. Krishnamoorthy.

CD release

The foundation, in association with the Carnatica Archival Centre, under the auspices of the Guru-Sishya Parampara series,released a CD containing a live recording of Semmagudi's concert in the 1960s. Mysore Chowdiah accompanies on the violin and Vellore Ramabhadran on the mridangam.

This series includes another CD containing excerpts of live concerts of his senior disciple, V. Subrahmaniam. Musicologist Dr. Pappu Venugopala Rao released the CDs and Mr. N. Murali received the first set.

The five-day festival, open to all music lovers, features two concerts a day and concludes on July 29.
