`Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest'
Genre: Adventure\ Fantasy
Director: Gore Verbinski
Cast: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Bill Nighy, Jack Davenport
Storyline: Jack needs the Dead Man's Chest to save his soul, the East India company wants it too and the Dead Man, Davy Jones, wants Jack.
Bottomline: Dear God, bring Jack back. Soon.
Gentlemen and Ladies, it is time to think of things to take your mind off the movie as you wait for the last in the trilogy.
Because, `Dead Man's Chest' will haunt you for the next few months, as director Gore Verbinski gives us a cliff hanger of a sequel to the much-loved Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. Like ``Empire Strikes Back" or ``Matrix Reloaded," this one ends on a note that will endanger your fingernails.
There is not a dull moment in the second instalment of this celebration of cinema.
Right from the moment Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) makes his entry from a coffin floating in the sea, it is one hell of a sail.
The sequel begins exactly from where the first ended: Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and Will (Orlando Bloom) prepare for their wedding, only to be arrested by the East India Company officials for aiding Jack in the first part.
This time around, you also meet the man who rules the sea, Davy Jones himself (Bill Nighy delightfully animated with motion control cameras) and his crew of dead pirates, waiting for Jack to repay an old debt.
The only way for Jack to save his soul and escape permanent residence in Davy's ghost ship ``The Flying Duchess" is to find the Dead Man's Chest. As Will and Elizabeth join Jack in his quest for the chest, they must fight sea-monsters that munch on ships and their own demons.
The animation and visual effects (Industrial Light and Magic) are among the best seen this year, they bring alive a world you've only read about, fleshing out sea-phantoms of the water world in larger-than-life detail.
A riot
But the most likeable visual effect in the film is Johnny Depp, who makes Jack Sparrow all the more endearing and memorable. Watch him mouthing gibberish among the tribals and later, sprinkling Paprika over himself, when the cannibals corner him: he's a riot.
Orlando Bloom has more footage in the film than Jack himself and has nothing to do but his usual brand of sword-fighting heroics. And the ravishing Keira Knightley too has a bigger role this time around, towards the second half of the film.
You will be in for many surprises. Director Gore Verbinski is a man in control of his ship.
This is one sequel that lives up to the first part and goes beyond.
It is a little difficult to analyse plot-lines before the story is complete and the story will only be complete when Pirates 3 releases next year.
Dear Gore, please bring Captain Jack Sparrow back soon, I need my soul back.
