Poetic soiree

Jamia Millia Islamia organised a mushaira to mark Independence Day.

Wajahat Habibullah

On the eve of the 59th Independence Day, a mushaira was organised at Jamia Millia Islamia. The stage glittered with the presence of poets like Gulzar Dehlwi, Mazhar Imam, Noorjahan Sarwat, Humayun Zafar Zaidi, Majid Deobandi, Ahmad Mehfooz and many more.

The chief guest for the night was Wajahat Habibullah. Aimed as a platform for interaction between students and teachers, the mushaira was conducted by the Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies of the University. All the poets presented their latest composition. Most of them started with ghazals. They laced their verse with social messages revolving around terrorism, growing population, etc.

Gulzar Dehlwi pointed out, "Ironically, mushaira is becoming more popular day by day in India and abroad, but Urdu is on decline.". The poets also expressed their feelings about independent India and their views on the post independent era."
