Engaging vocal recital

Chandanabala's recitals were impeccable.

Visakha Music Academy, in memory of its patron members Kotra Suryanarayana Murthy and his wife Satyavathi, organised a vocal recital of G. Chandanabala Kalyan from Mumbai at Kalabharathi last Saturday. Ch. Sanyasi Rao of Vizianagaram on violin, local artiste G. Venkata Rao on mridangam and B. Maruthi Raghuram from Rajahmundry on ghatam ably lent support.

Expansive expatiation of Marivere (Lathaangi-Khandachaapu), Raagam Thaanam and Pallavi (Jagadekapathe Paarthasaradhe) in Kambhoji-Aaditaalam were the highlights of her performance that evening.

Despite the attribute of becoming suddenly brittle, she made good use of her otherwise pleasingly sharp voice. Minor deviations like neglect of choosing of appropriate phraseology with a combination of the Poorvanga Swaras (Kalyani) and the Uttaranga Swaras (Mayamaalavagoula) of the Moorchana of Lathangi notwithstanding, she brought out a convincing picture of the 63rd Melakartha Raagam in her aalapana.

She evocatively sang the krithi in it and concluded it with invigorating neravu and swaram in the two speeds. The Thanam and Pallavi after elaborate aalapana of Kambhoji replete with sensible prayogas were erudite exercises. The swaram especially concluded in Raagamalika comprising Ranjani, Behag, Bhairavi and Mohanakalyani in particular was enticing. The other items she sang impressively were the Naatakuranji varnam with which she got off to a brisk start, Devaranama-Vande Suvudaviyalli Gananadha of Purandaradasa (Naata), Ganamurthe (Ganamurhi), Annapoorne Visalakshi (Saama) and Naanatibratuku Naatakamu of Annamayya in Revathi.
