Festival Glimpses Kuchipudi dance ballet 'Vandella Vandemataram'
The five day fete of music and dance organised by Visakha Music and Dance Academy concluded on a splendid note with the vocal recital virtuously rendered by Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar of Kolkata. The virtuoso eruditely accompanied on tabla by Anand Gopal Bandopadhyay and harmonium by Jyothi Goho, enthralled all alike for about two and half hours.
Ulhas sang compositions in Miyamalhar (Vilambhit in Ektal and Druth in Teental), Kedar and Kamach in Teental, Malkauns and Bhairavi in Jap and Teental.
Scintillating recital
The knowledgeable choice represented one raga each from five out of the six basic groupings into which all the Hindustani ragas stand classified. One constituted all Sudh swaras that characterise the Bilawal Thaat (Sankarabharanam) and its janyaragas, the others marked with the occurrence of one, two, three or four Vikrithi swaras (Komal Ri and Ga, Theevra Madhyam, Komal Dha and Ni).
His sublime alap in the three speeds and scintillating sargam in the two speeds reflected glimpses of the Gwaliar, Agra and Jaipur gharanas specialised by his father N.D. Kashalkar, Pt. Ram Marathe and Pt. Gajananbua Joshi under whose expert tutelage Ulhas mastered the art of exposition.
