A question of faith

VIJAY GEORGE

Joshiy's `Pothanvava' has Mammootty and Gopika in the lead.

HUMOUR AND ACTION: Mammootty, Gopika and Usha Uthup on the sets on `Pothanvava,' which has been scripted by Benny P. Nayarambalam.

Vava has no religion. Born to a Brahmin father and a Christian mother, Vava is happy being both a Hindu and a Christian. However, after being deserted by his father, Vava was unable to gain admission to a school and later in life he finds it difficult to find a bride for himsef.

He has been baptised by the local residents as `Pothanvava.'

The shooting of director Joshiy's `Pothanvava,' in which Mammootty dons the title role, is in full swing inside producer Lal's plush home near Kakkanadu, Kochi.

Family entertainer

Joshiy, who has just wrapped up `Janmam' with Suresh Gopi, says the film will be a family entertainer with lots of humour and action. Mamootty and Joshiy have delivered a number of hits in the past.

This is scenarist Benny P. Nayarambalam's next film after `Chanthupottu.'

Giving an outline of the story Benny says, "After Vava's father deserts his family, his mother steps in to fill the vacuum and be both mother and father to her son. We wanted a fresh face for the role and singer Usha Uthup seemed to be the perfect choice," says Benny.

Gopika is the heroine. She plays a lawyer who devotes most of her time to sort out the the legal issues that Vava creates.

The scene being canned has Mammootty talking to Bijukkuttan, who is popular in comedies on the small screen. Cinematographer Sanjeev Sankar gives some instructions to his assistants as the camera captures the reactions of both the actors.

Benny, who makes it a point to be present all along during the making of his films, says, "The film discusses a serious issue in an entertaining way. It's not easy for someone to be part of society and yet stay clear of all religions."

`Pothanvava' is being made under the banner of Lal Creations and will be in the cinema halls by November.

Lyrics by Vayalar Sarat Chandra Varma have been tuned by Alex Paul. The stills are by Ajit V. Sankar.
