DEBUT PERFORMANCE: Raghunandan Rao started his concert with the Bhairavi Ada tala varnam `Viribroni.'
It was his debut performance in Kerala and he captivated the audience. A student of engineering in Bangalore, Raghunandan Rao's flute recital was organised by Edapally Sangeetha Sabha as part of their monthly programme at Changampuzha Park.
Raghu started his concert with the Bhairavi Ada tala varnam `Viribroni' by Pachamiriyam Adiyappa. A dritha kalam embellished the piece. After `Vathapi' (Hamsadhwani in Adi tala), a Dikshithar composition, the tempo was set by the Tyagaraja Pancharatna krithi `Entharo Mahanubhavalu' in Sriragam (Adi).
Traversing octaves
A Swati Tirunal kriti `Deva Deva' in Mayamalavagowla, Rupakam, was followed by Pattanam Subramaniya Iyer's kriti `Paridanamirchithe' in Bilahari set to Khanda chapu. A brief `Abheri' and Tyagaraja's `Nagumomu' in Adi tala had Raghu traversing the higher octaves effortlessly. Another Tyagaraja kriti, `Njanamu sagarada' in Purvikalyani (Rupakam) was well received by the audience.
The main item of the evening, `Chakkani Raja' and the raga `Kharaharapriya' transported music buffs on wings of music. The niraval and manodharma swaras were proof of Raghu's mastery over the instrument.
Edapally Ajith on the violin provided excellent support. Krishnalumar on the mrindagam and Mangat Pramod on the ghatom played a melodious thani.
Raghu wound up the recital with a Purandaradas Devarnama's `Krishna ne begame' in Yamunakalyani and the popular Swati Thillana in Dhanasri.
