Kairali TV's `Symphony' is one programme that continues to keep music fans glued to television. A programme was conducted in Kochi to celebrate the 250th episode of `Symphony.'
Veteran composer M.K. Arjunan inaugurated the event. Playback singers P. Jayachandran, G. Venugopal, Harini, Sriram, Rashmi Madhu and Gayatri Varma participated in the show. Sriram, a singer from Kerala who has made his reputation in Tamil film music, rendered hits like `Iyengaruveettu' apart from regaling the audience by playing a `Chinnathambi' song on the flute and an old Malayalam song `Swarnameeninte' on the harmonica with equal felicity.
No Hindi songs
However, the choice of songs could have been better. There was an overdose of Tamil songs. Not a single Hindi song was rendered.
An event meant to celebrate the milestone of a music-based programme should have had a better repertoire of songs, one that was representative of the character of the programme.
Venugopal, who was featured in the opening episode of `Symphony' in June 2002, talks passionately about the programme.
Joint endeavour
"The programme was a joint endeavour that I had conceptualised along with its first anchorperson Krishnakumar. We wanted a programme where music, ambience, grooming and technology would blend to create a different experience."
The success of the programme reinforces what S.P. Balasubramanyam has stated in several interviews: despite the proliferation of cacophony the Malayali listener retains his innate preference for melody.
