Tribute to Narayana Teertha

P. SURYA RAO

The 331st anniversary of the sage was celebrated in a befitting manner.

The 331st jayanti of sage Narayana Teertha who authored the classic work Srikrishna Leela Tarangini, was fittingly celebrated by Sri Sadguru Sangeeta Sabha of Vijayawada at the Sivaramakrishna Kshetram.

The programme began with an enlightening lecture-demonstration titled Sadguru Sri Narayana Teertha Hridayam by well known scholar and president of Aurobindo Society T.S. Ramachandra Rao who is also involved in building a temple of the great sage, along with the organisers of Narayana Teertha Swamigal Trust of Thirupunthuruthi.

Tiruppondur was the place where Narayana Teertha attained Sidhi centuries ago. The temple is coming up at the birthplace of Narayanateertha, the village of Kaja, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh.

Remembering his works

T.S. Ramachandra Rao, a scholar of music, made an in-depth study of Narayana Teertha's life and works, spoke at length demonstrating the richness of poetical expressions in Sanskrit songs from Srikrishna Leela Tarangini, known as Tarangams widely sung in bhajans and concerts. The tarangams are also immensely suitable for composing dances. The lecture demonstration was followed by a scholarly Taranga ganam by noted vidwan and retired principal of Government Music College, Komanduri Seshadri.

Some tarangams Seshadri rendered were Jaya Jaya Ramanadha (Nata), Pooraya Mamakamam (Bilahari), Balagopala (Mohana), Govinda Ghataya (Kambhoji), Krishnam Kalaya Sakhi (Mukhari) and Mamava Madhava (Neelambari).

Seshadri was supported on violin by P.Nageswara Rao and K.Sadgurucharan on mridangam.
