Fabricating exquisite work of art

PHOTO : M. VEDHAN

Exotic and appealing

Here is the age-old magic of Chikan's 32 `tankas' and its ethereal lace-like appeal taken to create a line of exotic, high fashion saris, salwar kurta ensembles and kurtas for men. Created by Mamta of Lucknow and her team of 300 craftswomen, each `Fabricate' piece is, quite simply, a work of art.

The magic of Mamta's creations lie in a melding of exquisite workmanship and brilliant visual concepts. The range spans georgette, crepe and tussar saris, bridal wear, salwar kurta ensembles for evening glamour as well as stoles and crisp cotton men's kurtas.

While the white on white line has that exquisite chikan work at its `fairy' best, the red and orange line offers bridal saris which are densely embroidered with `amris,' `flowers' and so on. Touches of `zari' and bead embellishment give added glamour. Many of the saris have rich all over motifs done in brocade.

The tussar sari line is more minimal but sports beautifully embroidered amri motifs in the pallu and body. So beautifully is the craft work that chikan often mimics a `gara' Parsi border in a few of the saris, filigree work jewellery in some or calligraphy in some others.

And in true chikan tradition, despite the use of bright non-traditional colours or motifs and the contemporarity of presentation, each of Mamta's creations has a timeless muted appeal. The `Fabricate' exhibitions in on till September 10 at Collage, Angson Centre, 153, Greams Road.
