A saga of success

S. R. ASHOK KUMAR

Sathya Jyothi Films, celebrating its silver jubilee, has made filmmaking a winning proposition.

T. G. Thyagarajan

Sathya Jyothi Thygarajan believes in method. An MBA, he plans work and nine out of ten times executes it within the timeframe, like for instance the release of ``Em-Magan," that hit the theatres on September 7, as he wished. And he is happy with the result too. His move to rope in Thirumurugan, director of the highly successful soap ``Metti Oli," has paid off, the family drama doing well at the box office.

Venus Govindarajan, along with his partner, Krishnamurthy, produced under the banner "Venus Pictures" several super hit films in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. In 1976, the late MGR surprised Venus Govindarajan, father of Thyagarajan, by offering to do a film for him independently. And he suggested the name, ``Sathya Jyothi Films" for the new outfit and gave him the letter of confirmation in his Emjeeyar Pictures letterhead.

"The blessings of the legend, my father and my father-in-law Rm.Veerappan and others have enabled us to produce many hits — the list includes "Moondram Pirai," "Idhayam," "Honest Raj," "Kizhakku Vaasal" and "Parthiban Kanavu."

A NEW LINE THAT HAD TAKERS: Parthiban Kanavu

Favourite vocation

T.G.Thyagarajan, who studied business management in the U.S. was commercial manager of a leading company. He gave it up to pursue his favourite vocation that of making films and he has made a success of it. He has the support of wife Selvi, who takes care of office administration and costume designing and his brother, TTG Thyagasaravan. Thyagarajan's sons Arjun and Senthil also play an active role in the making of films.

Sathya Jyothi Film's first venture was the release of the dubbing picture "Yasodha Krishna" in which Sridevi acted as child Krishna. Then in 1981 along with "Srini Creations" the company co-produced "Andha Ezhu Naatkal," a sensational hit written and directed by K.Bagyaraj. "Moondram Pirai," Sathya Jyothi's first independent film, directed by Balu Mahendra, won several national and State awards and international recognition. It fetched Kamal Haasan the "Bharat" award for a sterling performance.

AN ALL-TIME HIT: Moondram Pirai

Sathya Jyothi's experience with the small screen has been a happy one too. The serials produced under the banner, since 1990, have had high TRP rating. ``Anandam," aired by Sun TV has completed 680 episodes.
