For the sake of women

'Ganga' focuses on women's emancipation.

A still from Ganga

Affluence cannot always give rise to innovative output, but limited resources can still do the trick. Perhaps scribe turned filmmaker Sekhar Yelamanchi believes in this dictum.

"It is easy to effectively convey a message through this popular medium so I launched Maithri Kalamandir and made Ganga, a film that raises a voice against the atrocities committed on women in the name of age-old customs," says Sekhar talking about his debut venture.

He hastens to add, "Though the backdrop I have taken is the Devadasi system, the theme is focused on the suppression of women, usurpation of their freedom and their emancipation."

Music director's cut

His name is rarely associated with low budget films. Mention this to Koti he smiles and says, "I could not refuse when popular lyricist Andesri who has written songs for my earlier films requested me to compose music for Ganga.

Once Sekhar narrated the story and said that he wanted live recording with traditional folk instruments, I immediately jumped at the offer. Keeping in tune with the film's situations we used traditional Indian instruments and ragas.

All the eight songs are supported by strong situations. That's the reason I feel the songs will appeal more when one watches the film. I have derived great job satisfaction. Generally for rural based plots there will not be much scope for innovative rerecording. Ganga posed a challenge during the background score. "
