For three days, the Bapuji Kalamandir here has reverberated with the melodious notes of Telugu songs coupled with recitation of popular as well classical verses in both Telugu and Sanskrit.
Paadanaa Telugu Paata, a cultural programme organised by the Madras Telugu Academy between September 8 and 10, aimed at popularising Telugu music in its full gloryand giving an opportunity to promising singers. More than 250 singers from different parts of AP and Orissa participated.
The three-day musical bonanza began with a recitation by P.V.S.R. Kameswari. She recitedthe immensely popular verse of Pothana viz mandaara makarandamunu telu madhupambu bovune, immortalised by the melodious tune composed by the inimitable music director Saluru Rajeswara Rao (for the film Bhakta Prahlada).
Others opted for the equally popular slokam, Sri Raghavam Dasaradhatmaja, composed by Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao (for the film Lava-Kusa). Most participants opted for classical songs.
The organisers had to remind participants that there was no bar on singing popular film songs.
Some male singers had tried verses like Chelliyo Chellako of Tirupathi Venkata Kavulu. These were immortalised by stage veterans like Raghuramamiah, Pisapati and what one witnessed was a poor imitation of the giants of yesteryears.
