`Perur Natyanjali,' conducted by Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis at the ramparts of the spacious Patteeswarar temple, provided aesthetic satisfaction to Coimbatoreans. The four-day dance festival showcased the talents of fresh as well as popular artistes in Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchupidi and Odissi.
Disciples of Lavanya Sankar presented the beautifully choreographed inaugural dance. `Adiyaruku Arulum Amuthan,' a thematic presentation in adherence to the `margam' starting from pushpanjali to tillana by the disciples of Amutha Dandapani, Coimbatore, was immensely enjoyable.
The episodes of Markandeya, Ravana and Nandanar were realistically depicted for the Nattakurinji varnam, `Swami Naan Undhan Adimai' by Papanasam Sivan. Bhavani Kishore Kumar gave impressive vocal support. Guru Amutha Dandapani's imaginative choreography and majestic nattuvangam enhanced the impact of the dedicated performance of the students.
Udimat Pandanallur Natya Palli, Chennai, danced for Swati Tirunal's Ramayana ragamalika, `Bhavayami Raghuramam' and the students of Salangai Academy of Fine Arts, Tiruchi, presented a neat Bharatanayam performance.
Dr. Vempatti Chinna Satyam's Kuchipudi troupe offered a taste of genuine Kuchipudi. Lena Lakshmi, from Ukraine, enthralled the audience with her captivating traditional item, `Shivudu Thandavam Adinade'. Gopalakrishna Bharati's `Enneramum Undhan Sannidhiyile Naan' in Devagandhari was beautifully presented with interesting sancharis and jathis. Vempati Ravi Shankar's vocal support and nattuvaangam were pleasing.
Agile movements
Kathak by Dr. Vaibhavi Joshipura, Hari and Chetna (Bangalore) was marked by nimble footwork and agile movements. The Siva Ashtakam and the song on Krishna depicting interesting episodes from the Mahabharata were full of grace. The audience was spellbound by the traditional Kathak full of swift chakkar (twirls) to the accompaniment of the tabla and the tinkle of the ghungroos. The Bharatanatyam performance of the students of Coimbatore Lalitkalakshetra was followed by the presentation of Nrityarasodaya comprising Brinda Das, Lavanya, Janani, and Vishali (a team of TV personalities).
Madurai Muralidharan's `Konjum Salangai' in Latangi, `Sri Ramachandra Kripalu Bhaja Mana' by Tulasidas, the javali presented by Lavanya and the innovatively choreographed tillana by Balamurali Krishna in Kadhanakuthoohalam were remarkable. Besides the vocal support and nattuvangam, the richly different costumes also contributed to the success of their programme.
Silambam of Coonoor presented a group dance led by Nalini Prakash. Swati Tirunal's `Sankara Ssri Girinatha Prabho' by Nalini as solo presentation was impressive.
`Azhagu Arul Aadal' (Ramyam, Hitham, Natyam), dance-drama by the disciples of Anitha Guha focused on the efficacies of Bharatanatyam. They presented episodes from Ayyappa's avatharam and Mahabharata. Mohini and Bhasmasura's dance, the snake dance, Krishna's Kalinga Narthana, Ayyappa's dance of bravery, and Shiva's Ananda Tandavam were lovely.
Revathi Sankaran's narrative was a great help in following the dance sequences. With the beautiful costumes and realistic make-up that enhanced the effect and the orchestra led by Kalyani Kalyanaraman (vocal support), Anitha Guha's disciples stole the show.
The Temple of Fine Arts, Coimbatore, presented `Siva Ashtak' and `Kali Kavach' in Odissi style and `Shiva Panchaksharam' Bharatanatyam style. The eight forms of Siva depicting His fierceness and divinity were brought out in the former, and the latter portrayed Mother Kali as a destroyer of the bad qualities in our minds.
Most of the episodes presented in Odissi were repeated in Bharatanatyam also as the lyrics demanded it but the dancers were able to bring out the distinguishing features of both the styles of dancing.
The gurus Kamakshi and Vimala Chandrasekhar were honoured on the stage for the excellent choreography.
