Poetry in stone

RADHAKRISHNAN KUTTOOR

Icons in Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan's poetry have been transformed into sculptures.

FOLK AND MYTHICAL ICONS: Characters in Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan's poetry have been given a form and shape.

Folk and mythical icons in the poems of Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan have now been given a form and shape by the Delhi-based sculptor K.P. Soman.

Sculpture park

He has initiated a novel sculpture park that houses the characters created by the versatile Malayalam poet, popularly known by the name of his home village Kadammanitta.

Kadammanitta village, surrounded by verdant hills and dales, in the Central Travancore district of Pathanamthitta, is all set for the dedication ceremony of this unique park of sculptures. Made of cement concrete, the sculptures are not mere objects of curiosity; Soman has managed to capture the rustic spirit and flavour that is predominant in the poet's characters. Kurathi, a tribal woman, Kaattaalan, a savage, Kirathavrithom, depicting primitivism, and Santha come alive in this park.

Set up on seven cents of land adjoining the local Government High School in Kadammanitta, work on the park began 10 years ago. The park also houses a naturally created small pond that reflects the images in the tranquil waters during the rainy season, and an open-air theatre.

It has been funded by generous contributions from the local people and the financial support of the Union and State Government. The Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee will dedicate the park to the nation at a solemn function to be held in Kadammanitta on October 4.
