Refulgent gleams of Kuchipudi

A. RAMALINGA SASTRY

The recital got off to an absorbing start with Gajavadanabeduve paying obeisance to Lord Vinayaka.

DEGREE OF PERFECTION Students of Kuchipudi Kalakshtra presenting a recital.

A Kuchipudi dance recital was presented in Kalabharathi recently. Well organised under the supervision of the coordinating committee of the local Kuchipudi Kalakshetra, (an offshoot of the Chennai based Kuchipudi Art Academy of Padmabhushan Vempati China Satyam), it was presented by 10 students (former and present) of the institute. All kudos to the principal of the institute Hari Rama Murty (prime disciple of Dr. Vempati) who along with his dedicated mridam vidwan Kantilal made the youngsters accomplish high professional standards.

The recital got off to an absorbing start with Gajavadanabeduve paying obeisance to Lord Vinayaka by the former students Sudha Chalasani and Alivelumanga along with the highly talented and comely looking Himabindu. Lakshmi Pravesa Daruvu (raagamalika in aaditalam) presented as a solo by Himabindu later was the highlight of the evening.

The solos presented one each by the former students, Paluku Tenelatalli of Annamayya by Sudha Chalasani and Anandatandavam by Alivelumanga as well stood out for the high degree of perfection they achieved in all aspects.

Siva-Parvathi depicting the Lasyatandavam by Viswasanthi as Siva and Sumathi in particular as Parvathi in association with Sraddha, Anuradha, Sruthi, Sobha and Raviteja in other characters was another piece that attracted all alike. The shortened form of the dance ballet Mahishasuramardhini by all in group provided the grand finale.

All kudos to Hari Ramamurty, principal of the institute, who not only trained the danseuses but also provided expert nattuvangam while Kantilal expertly lent support on the mridangam.

Saisavitri rendering vocal, Chandamouli on violin, Suryanarayana on flute and Lakshmana Sarma reciting Manthras were not wanting but could do better. Make-up by Surya Rao, Sudha and Bharani was excellent.

Scintillating dances

Nataraj Music and Dance Academy was established by noted connoisseur of fine arts Vikram Goud (Dip. in Acting and Direction - AU Dept. of Theatre Arts) in the year 2000 in Visakhapatnam. The first batch of its pupils, nearly 20 young children between 5-10 yrs. age group gave their first performance on the stage.

They were all trained by K.V. Lakshmi who after her initial training under Uma Sampath at Vizianagaram honed her skills under the expert tutelage of noted danseuse Shantisri and Natyacharya Harirama Murty.

Executing sprightly footwork and movement, almost all the children danced their way deep into the hearts of the audience at Kalabharathi last Wednesday.

Principal of Siddhendra Yogi Kalaapeetham at Kuchipudi, Vedantham Ramalinga Sastry, many a time Nandi Award winner B.V.A. Naidu and noted violinist G. Annaji Rao were felicitated on the occasion.
