Memories of a great poet

S.R.ASHOK KUMAR.

It was time for nostalgia as a scene from `Sivappadikaram' was shot in the house of poet Kannadasan.

WRITER AND PUBLISHER: Sivappadikaram

It was a sweet surprise for the people near the house of the late Kannadasan. For it became the shooting spot for Screenplay Entertainment's ``Sivappadikaram."

Those who are familiar with the house have nostalgic memories about the poet and his way of life. It was near the entrance, seated in a yellow cane chair that he would sit and receive visitors in the morning. The chair has been preserved as part of his memorabilia.

The scene of action for the film, however, was the first floor, where the books of Kannadasan are stocked.

Welcoming the unit, Gandhi Kannadhasan, said, "I'm happy to project my father's books in the film. After all it was through writing that he got fame."

Director Karu. Palaniappan is moved on seeing the pile of books.

``The story actually is set in Madurai. But it is a great privilege to work where the great poet lived and amidst his creations," he said. Vishal wants to get a book published and comes here. He meets the publisher and spotting a police van through the window he retreats and leaves only after it moves.

Is Vishal familiar with Kannadasan's works, at least the songs? ``Of course," comes the reply. ``He was a great poet who wrote lyrics to suit the situation and mood so beautifully," he expanded.

``The director has done the right thing by shooting in his house. The film has come out very well. It has action, love and sentiment. It has been a different kind of experience for me and my fans will enjoy it," he added.

New singers

Of the eight songs tuned by Vidyasagar, six are folk numbers. One is a song of Bharatidasan. They have all been rendered by new singers.

The story does not allow shooting in a foreign location and hence the crew travelled around Tamil Nadu.

The majority of the portion has been shot in American College, Theni king's palace and Pudukottai. Raghuvaran is doing a full-length role after a gap of nearly four years.

The unit was all praise for the veteran's punctuality, commitment and the way he cooperated with the members.

The cast includes Mamtha, Rajan P. Dev and Manivannan. The camera is handled by Gopinath and editing is by Suresh Ars. The film, produced by M. R. Mohanradha and B. S. Radhakrishnan, is scheduled to be released in the second week of November.
