Future beckons

The Carnatic vocal arangetram of sisters Aparna and Akshaya proved their potential.



FIRST STEP Aparna and Akshaya in performance.

One could hardly believe that it was their maiden performance when Aparna and Akshaya sang for their Carnatic vocal arangetram, organised by Gayatri Fine Arts at the Triveni auditorium this past week. Hailing from a family of musicians and grand daughters of the renowned Thiru Pugazh vocalist late T.S. Rammurthi Iyer the sisters are disciples of Guruvayur Dr T. V. Manikandan.

Aparna, the elder one, is pursuing her Masters in Computer Application and Akshaya is in final year of her Commerce graduation, but both have a strong flair for classical music and have completed a diploma course (Sangeet Shiromani) from Delhi University.

Akshaya has also received the CCRT scholarship and Gayatri Fine Art's Kamala Kannan Memorial Tanpura Award.

The Todi varnam readied them for the invocatory `Shri Ganapati' composed in Saurashtram and Aaditala by Tyagaraja . Chandrajyoti is a difficult raga with both the Rishabhs but they handled it very well. This was followed by `piece de resistance', the famous `Samaja vara gamana' in raga Hindolam, a popular composition of Tyagaraja. It was preceded by a detailed Aalapanam , in the sweet resonant voice of Aparna, excellently accompanied by the violin of V.S.K. Chakrapani.

Well executed

After the culmination of this well rendered composition into a Taani Aavartanam (percussion elaborations) of Mridangam by K.N. Padmanaabhan and Ghatam by N.Kannan, there were a couple of relatively lighter pieces in Devgandhaari and Kalyanavasantam before they went on to sing `Devi Jagat Janani' a composition of Swathi Thirunala in raga Shankarabharanam, which again was rendered in great detail. A good flow of Kalpana swaras and Niravals were indicative of their Manodharma as well.

`Sarasiruh nayane' in raga Amritvarshini, a composition of Tyagaraja and `Venkatachala nilayama' a Sindhubhairavi composition of Purandara Dasa came next. They concluded their recital with a vibrant Tillana of Shri Balamurali Krishna in raga Brindavani Saranga, set to Aadi Tala. The excellent accompanying artists like Chakrapani, Padmanabhan and Kannan gave the young duo enthusiastic and inspiring support on violin, mridangam and ghatam respectively.

Aparna and Akshaya could extract the raga bhava with considerable ease during the well-structured concert. Maturity, of course, will come with time, but the potential is definitely there. Glimpses of a deep emotional commitment , assures that Aparna and Akshaya have got a bright future ahead. The overflowing Triveni auditorium itself proved how well received even their Arangetram was!
