Exclusive for the festival
Maurya on Nungambakkam High Road, Anugraha building, has always sought exclusive textiles, to lure the shopper. Paithani saris and gossamer thin embellished silken scarves and dupattas are the chosen theme for this festive season.
Coming directly from the weavers of Paithan, near Aurangabad, these gorgeous silks have the traditional colours of magenta, blue, orange and yellow. The pure zari is made from silver and gold, and the woven borders have the look of beaten gold.
The work is labour intensive and a 10" border takes a whole day to weave. Common motifs include peacocks, parrots, trees and mangoes.
The top range of Paithani saris would cost up to Rs.5 lakhs. Maurya is stocking a range from Rs.15000. A cheaper range costs Rs.8,000 and more. Special off white cottons in Paithani pattern are also available (Rs.4,500).
A few dupattas from Paithan too are on display. New life has been breathed into this ancient centre by the Maharashtra Govt. setting up, and supporting a very big weaving centre, to protect this languishing art. Also on display, as showpieces, are 150-year-old saris that look marvellous despite being worn out.
