An evening of mandolin
|
A concert by a couple hits the right notes.
|
Strangely, some of the most well knownmandolin players hail from West Godavari district, in particular Palakol. U. P. Raju and Nagamani, husband and wife team presented a scintillating mandolin duet for the monthly sabha Swarajhari at Sri Sivaramakrishna Kshetram, Vijayawada.
Raju received his musical training initially from late vidwan Rudraraju Subbaraju and gradually rose to eminence. His wife Nagamani was trained by her husband and both of them have given innumerable concerts in the country and abroad.
They received many prestigious awards and also produced a large number of CDs and cassettes that have been lapped up listeners.
The concert was sponsored by Lakshmana Siva Sarma and his wife Syamalamba.
Raju and Nagamani handled their instruments with great efficiency. They started the concert with `Viriboni'(Bhairavi) varnam and followed with `Sidhi Vinayakam' in Shanmukhapriya with fine raga delineation and kalpana swaras. This was followed by a Tamil tradition item called Mallari that is usually played in Tamil Nadu during religious processions. Nagamani played an attractive version of Poorvikalyani before the couple played `Ananda Natana' a Tamil keertana. The main item of the concert was a sumptuous ragam tanam pallavi in Gowrimanohari and set to Khanda triputa talam.
The pallavi was excellently executed by Raju and Nagamani and the kalpanaswaras were played as a melodious ragamalika. Superb mridangam support was given by Patri Satish Kumar whose touch on the mridangam was soothing to the ear.
Satish and ghatam artiste Tiruchi Murali presented a thrilling rhythmic treat at the end of the pallavi.
