IN ACTION Brahmanandam gets into the frame with a gun.
Movies spin the magic of make-believe. When one opens the backdoor of a guesthouse at Himayatnagar, to his dismay or surprise one can find himself in the dense forest of Vikarabad! That is the magic of movie craft. The other day we were at a guesthouse in Himayatnagar where the shooting of Sri Mahalakshmi Academy's maiden venture, Aa Roje produced by exhibitor and distributor K. Venkateswara Rao, was in progress. All the lead actors including hero Yashwant, heroine Sowmya were there. But by the time we reached the place it was pack up time. "Catch up with us tomorrow early morning, we go to Vikarabad," said the director K. S. Kumar.
It is a chase sequence in the jungles of Vikarabad. From police jeeps to trucks to cars and to bikes, different vehicles are parked at one place. The actors on location are the lead pair both students in the film, Brahmanandam, Sheriff (Style fame), Kishore in ACP uniform, hero's friends Babloo and Vijay and the heroine's two friends. Action coordinator Surya Prakash is engaged in conversation with the director and the cinematographer Prasad Babu.
The shoot commences. Every one runs using different modes of transport. The chase looks funny but it seems they are on the hunt for something. Moving away from the monitor, Kumar smiles and says, "It is too early to reveal why they are on the run. If I give that away, I will be telling you the entire story.
The basic concept is a break from the regular commercial cinema. I am not telling you that it is an offbeat film. It is indeed a commercial entertainer cast in a new mould. It is not a story that takes place in a day. One day a certain thing happens with which all the major characters in the story are related. From then on a series of incidents makes them run, chase and find out.
So we felt the title Aa Roje is an apt one. In this scene, all the major actors come to a guesthouse not knowing the other's presence there and once they know of it they decide to runaway. So when they open the backdoor of the guest house, they find themselves in a thick forest."
The film and the characters keep moving from one place to another like in a road film. "It is a non-stop entertainer with action, love and humour. Brahmanandam has a very interesting role that will remind one of his earlier performances - Khan Dada. Sheriff plays the villain. Kishore who acted as an ACP and main villain in Happy is playing an ACP one more time. Krishna Bhagwan and M.S. Narayana provide lighter moments.
After watching her performance in The Angrez, we took Sowmya for the heroine's role. She is a talented actress," said the director.
He reserved his praise for the film's hero Yashwant. "He is marvellous. I watched his Kannada debut film, Abhinandana (remade from a similar sounding Telugu hit).
I was impressed by his mature performance. He will go places in the industry," says Kumar. "Be it action, light hearted banter, romantic scenes or the sentimental ones he gives his best."
With the schedule coming to a close, Kumar says that five songs left to be filmed. "Vandemataram Srinivas gave fantastic music. We will be shooting two songs at RFC, one in Goa and another song in specially created sets. We have to record one more song."
The shoot is in progress. The director retires to the monitor. Yashwant and Sowmya are on a bike.
Brahmanandam throws some comic punches at the villains. An entertainer in the making.
