Blast from the past

P. SURYA RAO

A recent event presented glimpses of `Perini Sivatandavam' and `Andhra Natyam.'

Ancient dance forms `Perini' and `Andhra Natyam' were revived by well-known dance exponent Nataraja Ramakrishna, who made an in-depth research in almost extinct dance forms of Andhra.

The Perini dance tradition was widely prevalent in the courts of the kings belonging to the Kakatiya dynasty. Perini Sivatandavam, a dynamic male-oriented dance was presented by the Vijayawada Cultural Academy at Sri Sivaramakrishna Kshetram recently. Srinivas and Venkat performed Perini Sivatandavam exhibiting fine synchronisation of footwork. J. Priyanka, S. Bhavani and N. Jayaprada presented the Andhra Natyam items neatly.

The dance programme was inaugurated by Putta Rajakumari and the chief guest was noted patron of arts Putta Jaganmohan Rao. The artistes were honoured by N. Subba Rao, president of Chaitanya Sravanti.
