Journey on
O.S. SRIDHAR August 4, 1953 - October 21, 2006
The human span is mortal, but the arts deal with realms beyond the mortal ken. In a way, they make their practitioners immortal too. Thus Carnatic vocalist O.S. Sridhar, who passed away a few days ago, will live on in the memory of the music loving public of Delhi. Born in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, but brought up in Delhi, he epitomised the `Delhiised' South Indian generation, as much at home in his mother tongue as in Hindi and English, carrying the veneer of modernism without the brashness associated with this city.
Trained in Carnatic vocal music under his father, the eminent Vidwan O.V. Subrahmanyam, Sridhar leaned towards devotional music. He also brought out an album, Devata Dhyanam. He was well known as an accompanist to leading dancers of Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Mohiniattam. His long association with Bharatanatyam dancer Jayalakshmi Easwar yielded a number of music compositions specially created for the dance, including Nritya Roopam, Nadopasana and Bharatam. He also accompanied Yamini Krishnamurti, S. Kanaka among others. Sridhar will be remembered for his smiling demeanour and ready wit. At 53 a musician is still young. Unfortunately that was all the time allotted to Sridhar.
