Stargazing

MALATHI RANGARAJAN

Completely bucolic

A visit to the colourful village side is what `Thirudi' promises its viewers. It's been quite a while since rustic locations have been seen in Tamil films, is maker Shankar K.'s contention. Shankar has assisted cinematographer-director Jeeva in films such as `12B,' `Ullam Kaetkumae' and `Run' (Hindi). Produced under the GV Films' banner, `Thirudi' has entirely been shot in Valliyur and the neighbouring areas of Tirunelveli. The hero, Kadhir, is a new face and so is heroine Tanya, a popular model from Kerala.

Mirroring the latest

Ilaiyaraja and Cheran join hands after a long while for the much talked about `Maaya Kannaadi.' The maestro had scored the music for Cheran's first film, `Desiya Geetham.' And deviating from his practice of not going abroad for shooting, director and actor Cheran has canned a couple of songs in Australia! Going by the stills in circulation, Cheran looks quite hip and that again is farremoved from the down-to-earth appearance that he's preferred to showcase all these years. But like his other ventures `Maaya Kannaadi' is also progressing at quite a slow pace.

`Poi's heroine

"For a person born and brought up in Australia Vimala Raman's Tamil is unbelievably chaste," certifies the PRO. The actor, a trained classical dancer and model (hoardings of the products she endorses adorn many vantage points of Chennai), is the heroine of the soon-to-be-released `Poi' from K. Balachander. The man's magic wand should trigger a successful career for the young actor. Acting was not something Vimala's mother wanted her to take up. Studies were the only priority even when Vimala was offered `Nala Damayanti' a couple of years ago. But the second offer proved too significant to be turned down. So now she's keeping her fingers crossed for `Poi.'

The strategy worked

Heroines these days are very smart. Take the case of the young Gowri, from Mumbai, who has already entered Telugu filmdom. When P.Vasu was in Hyderabad recently scouting for a heroine for son and hero Shakti's debut film, `Thottaal Poo Malalrum,' Gowri approached him for the role. But not before doing enough homework about the filmmaker and his projects. Naturally Vasu was impressed, and now she's the leading lady of `Thottaal --' Three songs have already been filmed, and going by the stills Shakti looks quite comfortable in the romantic interludes.

"He says that's because his father wasn't around when he posed for them," laughs the PR person.
