An offbeat classic

`The Blue Umbrella' is scheduled to release in January.

After the critical acclaim of Omkara, Vishal Bharadwaj is awaiting the release of his offbeat film The Blue Umbrella. The film was completed much before Omkara and had its fair share of appreciation at select film festivals in India and abroad. The film targets children and stars Pankaj Kapur and Shreya Sharma. The film, which will release in January 2007, will be the first film to be released by UTV Classics, a sub-brand of UTV Motion Pictures that would promote experimental and unconventional cinema.
The Blue Umbrella is based on a Ruskin Bond novel by the same name. The film is set in an idyllic village in Himachal Pradesh. The film's heart and soul is Pankaj Kapur, who plays NandKishore, a shrewd shopkeeper. Nandu gets enchanted by a beautiful, mystical blue umbrella owned by Biniya, played by Shreya Sharma. The striking umbrella becomes the centre of attraction, disturbing the otherwise serene and peaceful ambience of the village.
