MUSICAL TRIBUTE Avadhanam on Ghantasala's songs in progress.
Commemorating the 84th jayanthi of the renowned playback singer and music director late Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao, Visakha Light Music Academy organised an avadhanam of his songs in Kalabharathi last Tuesday.
It turned out to be a fascinating simulation of the fervour, the memory power of the performer (Avadhani) gets teasingly tested in Telugu literary feats like Ashta, Satha and Sahasraavadhaanams. In the instant case, the Avadhani was Syed Rahmatullah, a native of Parlakhimidi of Ganjam district of Orissa and a medico working for Kamineni Medical College at Narketpalli, Nalgonda district.
Peter Mastaaru, Andaluri Someswara Rao, Sripada Venkanna, Ganti Murali, V. Rama Rao, V.G. K. Murty besides Gara Aruna, Ratna Sastry and Kasturi constituted the band of prucchakas (questioners).
Being imitative singers of merit of the songs rendered by Ghantasala, the men folk posed a variety of queries to the avadhani after singing either the pallavi or charanam of the song with excellent orchestral support rendered by Ch. Srinivas and party.
Rahmatullah gave out information regarding the lyrics, the raga, the situation for which Ghantasala sang it, the actor who donned the role, the composer, the director and the producer.Rahmatullah left an impression of being not only an epitome of an uncanny memory power but also a store house of information.
He enthralled the gathering for more than two hours.
Rendering of a couple of stanzas from two different songs by Andaluri Someswara Rao created in impression as if he brought alive Ghantalasa on stage.
Compering that went poetic by Raj Ganapathi was a special attraction.
