Kottayathu Thampuran's `Kalakeyavadham Kathakali' was performed at Ambalappuzha recently. The two-day programme, jointly organised by Sandarsan Kathakali Vidyalaya and Thrissur-based `Vedika,' was aimed at promoting young artistes.
The first day's show began with Devendra sending Mathali to invite Arjuna to heaven. On meeting Arjuna, Mathali tries to flatter him. But the embarrassed Arjuna replies through the famous padam `Salajjoham thava chadu vachanal.' The first day's performance concludes with Arjuna enjoying the scenes in Indra's kingdom.
Flair and sensitivity
The lead role of Arjuna was donned by Kalamandalam Shanmughan. He enacted his debut performance in this role with flair and sensitivity. Shanmughan ably rose to the occasion and many of his postures resembled that of veteran Kalamandalam Gopi. Sadanam Sadanandan portrayed Mathali.
The second day's performance began with a scene showing Urvashi confiding in her maid and seeking her advice to deal with her infatuation for Arjuna. Kalamandalam Vijayakumar portrayed Urvashi. In this scene, Arjuna was portrayed by Kalamandalam Mukundan. Kalamandalam Arun Warrier and Sucheendranath, students of Kerala Kalamandalam, effectively handled the roles of Indra and Indrani respectively.
Pathiyur Sankaran Kutty, Kalamandalam Babu Nambuthiri and Kalamandalam Vinod were the singers on both the days. Both of them played an outstanding role in making the programme a memorable one.
