Enlivening performance

P. VIJAYAMBIKA

Preethy Satheesh enthralled the audience with her concert that adhered to tradition.

STRIKING A CHORD: Preethy Satheesh's selection of Swati kritis added glow to her performance.

Pallavur Krishnan Kutty's extensive research on this musical instrument of yore proved that the instrument could be used as percussion for a Carnatic concert. Used in place of nadaswaram, `Kurumkuzhal,' an indigenous instrument, is now played along with `Chenda melam' in a concert.

Swathi Sangetha Sabha, Palakkad, honoured him with the title ` Nadachandrika' during its monthly programme at Vithunni Saneeswara Temple.

The function was followed by a Carnatic vocal concert by Preethy Satheesh. Preethy enthralled the audience with her concert that adhered to tradition. Her selection of ragas and domination of Swati kritis in the concert added glow to her performance. Her starting piece, an Ata tala varnam `Psalamelara' of Swati Tirunal, in Sankarabharanam was well received by the music buffs.

After the salutation to Lord Ganesa `Gajavadana karunasadana' in the raga Sreeranjani, a comprehensive alapana of Yadukulakamboji for `Divakara thanujam,' a Navagraha kriti of Muthuswami Dikshithar, set to Adi tala, struck a chord with the rasikas. `Veera Anjaneyam,' a composition of N. P. Ramaswami, set to Adi tala was enchanting. `Bhogeendrasayinam,' in Kunthalavarali, set to Khandachappu, delighted the rasikas.

An erudite rendition of Kalyani was followed by the Swati krithi `Pankajalochana,' set to Misrachappu, with niraval at `Vrindavananga ... ' and manodharmaswara in two speeds displayed the purity of the raga. R. Sandhya on the violin was excellent in her solo.

Masterly strokes

The thaniavarthanam of Mahesh Kumar saw masterly strokes on the mridangam.

Then the concert reached the pinnacle, a ragam-thanam-pallavi in the major raga Bhairavi. Mahesh Kumar followed the thanam on the mridangam. The Pallavi `Devi Bhargavi... ' in Khandathriputa, laced with ragamalika swaraprasthara was proof of her rhythmic skill. Preethy wound up her concert with the famous Dhanasree thillana of Swati Tirunal.
