Lackadaisical approach

HAS MANY LOOSE ENDS: Nenjirukkumvarai

It had everything — an unusual storyline, a good performance by young Naren (of "Chitiram Pesugirathu" fame) good songs by Srikanth Deva and above all an experienced hand like S.A.Chandrasekaran taking care of direction. But `Nenjirukkumvarai' fails to keep the audience riveted. Perhaps because of the several loose ends.

Naren is an honest and kind-hearted auto driver. He meets Deepa who falls in love with him and after a few meetings Naren reciprocates her affection. Her father, disapproves of this development but does not cause obstacles. Deepa meets with an accident and is seriously injured. Naren does not have the money to meet hospital expenses. The first half of the film goes on and on talking about love and lots of love. It is only after the intermission that the story picks up with Naren making the efforts to find the resources. Now it is all action. But there is very little to bind the two segments together.

A mature Naren has performed well both as a boy in love and as a man who wants to save the girl who trusts him. Deepa does not have much scope what with the script confining her to bed for the better part of the film. Sriman shows brilliance and so does small screen actor Sanjeev. Livingstone makes you laugh at times. Both `Thalaivasal' Vijai and Kalairani shine with experience. The encounter specialist officer is a worthy new find.

Camera by Jeevan has done a good job while Srikanth Deva should have concentrated more on the re-recording. Of the seven songs at least three are noteworthy. They are `Pudichirukku,' written by Na.Muthukumar and sung by Bombai Jaishree and Vijai Yesudas, `Orumurai Piranthaen' by Thamarai and sung by Hariharan and Sadhna Sargam and `Kicu Kichu' by Pa.Vijai and rendered by Udith Narayanan and Saindhavi.

It is surprising that an experienced director like S.A.Chandrasekar has not capitalised on the novelty of the story and the talent of the hero to make the film gripping throughout. If he thought the climax would work wonders, he is sadly mistaken. He has certainly wasted a good opportunity.
