Celebrating a landmark in Telugu cinema

Y. SUNITA CHOWDHARY

The industry that produces largest number of movies is now 75 years old.

Telugu cinema has completed 75 years and the film industry is planning to celebrate this glorious moment in a big way. A spectacular event is being planned at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre at the Hitex in Madhapur. K. S. Rama Rao, the convenor of the programme says: "We are trying to reach the standards set by Hollywood and Hindi cinema and there is an imperative need to expose our cinema as a full-fledged industry to the world. Entertainment is next to food and we want to take this medium to the corporate level." January 26-28, 2007 will be recorded for posterity when Telugu actors from all over the world will gather at one place. The pioneers of Telugu cinema who were instrumental in creating the infrastructure for the current and future generations will be remembered, honoured, their works recalled, and tributes will be paid to the actors, producers, directors, technicians et al. Cameras, equipment of the yesteryears will be displayed and the history of Telugu cinema will be unfolded for the public on DVDs.

K. S. Rama Rao says: they are planning to raise money through sponsorships, from donors, exhibitions and events. The logo, the website, the medals are being launched on the December 31 at Hyderabad and stalwarts of the film industry will be present for the inauguration. Not just artistes who live in the neighbouring states but all those who have been connected with Telugu cinema will be invited. The Movie Artistes Association is coming up with many entertainment based programmes the highlight being skits, dramas, dance-dramas that show the transition of cinema from its inception to the current day in terms of costumes, change in dialogue delivery, dances and development.

The programme will be represented by exhibitors and distributors. Chief Ministers from the southern States and Union Ministers will be the chief invitees.
