When artistes tinker with plays

Should actors be allowed to twist and invent dialogues?
|
Kallakuri Narayana Rao's plays, especially Chintamani, Varavikrayam and Madhuseva not only served to create awareness of the ill-effects of the practice of prostitution, dowry system and drinking of alcohol but were also hailed as classics in the firmament of Telugu literature.
The staging of Chintamani was engrossing for about 15 minutes, with Bilvamangaludu and his wife Radha discussing ethics of family life. Madduri Subrahmanyamas Bilvamangala rendered the dialogues in the poetic idiom melodiously and evocatively.
Then entered V. Satyavathi who seemed to be an apology for the title role.
Can actors and directors take the liberty of meddling with the native fervour of the sequences in the play, distort the script beyond recognition with their own dialogues and tarnish the image of the playwright, remains a moot point.
