IN STEP Pallavi Kumar came up with a good performance.
Pallavi Kumar, a Kuchipudi danseuse from the US gave a performance at the Ravindra Bharati, last week.Pallavi opened withBalamuralikrishna's Maha Devasutam in Aarabhi, which found an honoured place among many prayers to Lord Ganesha. Pallavi added apt expressions to each of the lines of the lyric. The other novel number she presented was Suryashtakam - slokas on Sun God. The singer converted them into a bit of lyrical form to beat and setting each sloka in different raga.
This eulogy to Sun God attained a traditional Kuchipudi appeal in Pallavi's presentation, reflecting its basic import that the Sun God is the creator and also for its survival. Pallavi then chose Annamacharya Kirtana, Namo Namo Raghukula Nayaka set to Raga, Naata. Pallavi interpreted the theme through interesting mimetic movements and apt mudras.
The sequences showing Srirama restoring Ahalya's stony figure to her original human form and Rama snapping Siva Dhanussu (ancient bow of Lord Shiva) and claimed the hand of princess Sita.
Another interesting number was the interpretation of Balamuralikrishna's composition in Raga Lavangi that describes how Goddess Tripura Sundari would go to punish the Asuras. Pallavi depicted the benign aspects of Goddess with telling impact.
The mimetic part of the dance was well balanced with the rhythmic footwork. Rajagopalacharya lent good percussion support on mridangam, enhancing the impact. The stage was also enriched with scenic effects.
