Action, sentiment and romance

S.R.ASHOK KUMAR

The fans of Vijay and Ajit have something to look forward to this Pongal. And Surya's brother makes his debut.

PONGAL JACKPOT: Pokkiri

The harvest festival is round the corner and so are the releases of a few Tamil films, an annual affair. Since Pongal falls on Monday, some will hit the theatres even today.

High on action and romance is `Pokkiri,' starring Vijay and Asin. Circumstances force the hero to align himself with the villain but not for long. Watch out for the climax that has a surprise. Sri Kanakarathna Movies's `Pokkiri,' produced by Ramesh Babu, is the 45th film of Vijay.

Prabhu Deva, who has directed two films in Telugu, makes his first attempt in Tamil. "The film has love, sentiment, fight and the acting of Vijay. We have shot the film in different locations here and in foreign countries," said Prabhu Deva, who is confident of the box office success of the film.

Thamiraparani

Vijay found working with Deva a wonderful experience. "I was happy to work with Prabhu Deva, the man who has given two hits in Telugu. The expectations are high and we have worked hard to satisfy our fans. It is a year (`Aadhi' was released last Pongal) since my film has been released and my fans must be looking forward to it and I have tried not to let them down," he said. Mani Sharma has scored the music while Nirav Shah has handled the camera. V. Prabhakar has written the dialogue. The screenplay-direction is taken care of by Prabhu Deva.

The mighty `Aazhwar'

Sri Rajakaliamman Super Films' `Aazhwar' has Ajit in the lead role while Asin again is the heroine.

Aazhwar

The story is about a young man who works as a ward boy in a hospital. One day he has an encounter with a `dada' who has everybody at his beck and call. Aazhwar takes on the mighty and wins not only with his brain but also with the strength of mind and body. Other artists are Sathyan, Lal, Aryan, Vincent Asokan and Nagai Mukundan. Srikanth Deva has scored the music while Ravi Maria has written the dialogue. Rameshji is the cameraman. Shella, who has worked as the associate to S.J.Suriya, is the director.

On the river bank

After a long gap Nagi Reddy's Vijaya Productions comes up with `Thamiraparani.' The doyen's son B.Venkartrama Reddy presents the film produced by great granddaughter B.Bharthi. Hari is the director.

Generally, Hari chooses a place and makes it the scene of action. This time round, he has woven the story of the people who live on the banks of a river.

"I am happy about way the film has shaped up," said Hari, who has also written the story, screenplay and dialogue. ``It is slick and interesting with all the ingredients necessary for a hit," he added.

Veerasamy

Vishal, new find Bhanu, Vijayakumar, Nasser, `Nizhalgal' Ravi, Manorama, Rohini, Ganja Karuppu and Meera Krishan are in the cast. Yuvan Shankar Raja has scored the music. Priyan has handled the camera. Na. Muthukumar has written the lyrics.

On a rural subject

Actor Surya's younger brother Karthi is making his debut with `Paruthi Veeran,' directed by Ameer, whose earlier effort, `Ram,' was critically acclaimed. Priya Mani is his pair. Other stars doing important roles are Saravanan, Ponvannan and Ganja Karuppu. Acccording to Karthi it is a rural subject, in fact a village where even the television has not made its entry. He plays the title role of Veeran hailing from Paruthiyur. The film has been shot in and around Theni and in the interiors of Madurai. For the first time, Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed music for a village theme. Ramji has taken care of the camera. Ameer has written the story, screenplay and dialogue and has produced the film for Team Work Production House.

Film for the fans

T. Rajender's `Veerasamy' with Mumtaz in the lead is ready for release. ``I make films to satisfy not only myself but also my fans. Produced under the banner Chimbu Cine Arts, the film has a good role for Mumtaz," said Vijaya T. Rajendar. "I feel that I have come a full circle. I started my film entry with T.R.'s film and now I am doing his film again after many years. I have a powerful role that gave much scope for acting," said Mumtaz.

Paruthi Veeran.

With Mani Ratnam's `Guru' leading the pack, a few others may also enter race in the last minute.
